Reunion for Prince William and Sister Joan

February 26, 2023

On Thursday 23rd February, HRH The Prince of Wales visited The Passage to officially open two newly refurbished accommodation projects, Passage House and Bentley House.

A major capital works programme started in 2021 which has seen both buildings undergo extensive renovations. Together, they will support around 225 people who have experienced homelessness, each year. The projects are an important part of the charity’s long-term strategy to end homelessness in London.

The Daughters of Charity started the Passage in 1980 and from 1992 Princess Diana brought Prince William and Prince Harry to the charity for the first of many visits. In 2019 Prince William became a patron of the Passage.

Prince William spoke to the staff, volunteers and residents. He also reunited with Sister Joan Moriarty, a Daughters of Charity St. Vincent De Paul, whom he remembered from a visit to The Passage when he was a boy. Prince William reportedly told her he would follow in his mother’s footsteps and bring his three children, George, Charlotte and Louis to visit in the future.

On Sunday, 6th July 2025, we gathered in Mill Hill with Liz’s mother, family, and friends to joyfully celebrate Sister Liz Smith’s Golden Jubilee as a Daughter of Charity. It was a wonderful afternoon, filled with gratitude and shared memories. In lieu of gifts, Liz generously requested donations in support of the mission in Kenya. We are also delighted to congratulate her on her recent appointment as Regional for Kenya, which forms part of the Province of Ireland. Warmest congratulations to Aine, to Liz, and to all the Sisters in the Company who have faithfully nurtured those new shoots now flourishing after 25 years.
