Province of Nigeria celebrates 60 years!

Dec 03, 2023

The Province of the Daughters of Charity in Nigeria celebrated the 60th anniversary of their founding on the 29th of November 2023. The province was founded in 1963 when three missionary Sisters (Daughters of Charity) from the Province of Great Britain came to settle in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.  The Sisters noticed the poverty experienced by women in the area and so engaged in the education of young girls in Secretarial studies, Home economics, and Home management. They visited the people in the neighbourhood, and shared their lives and their struggles with them.

To keep aflame the charism of the Founders in Africa, young Nigerian Women who felt the call to share in the charism of St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac were received into the Community.

In the year 1974, the Daughters of Charity arrived in Eleme, which has become the seat of administration of the Province of Nigeria since 1983.  The Daughters of Charity in Nigeria became a region under the Province of Ireland on 25 th  April 1976.  In September 1993, it rose to the status of a Vice-Province and since 1st February 2001, it was erected as a Province.  The Province of Nigeria is made up of Nigeria, Ghana, and Burkina Faso.
