Volunteers Stitch Together a Century of History

Creating a quilt is much more than stitching fabric together. In this case, it is also about preserving stories, celebrating a century of history and building new friendships along the way.

A dedicated group of local volunteers is helping to bring the 100 year history of the Daughters of Charity (in Austrlia) to life, one quilt square at a time.

The quilting project had its roots in 2008, when Sr Carole Jones was asked to create a project for Presentation at the Provincial Assembly, as a way of involving several of the Sisters, who were no longer actively involved in Ministry outside of the Marsfield campus.

The first quilt features intricate applique designs created by individual Sisters, each drawing on her own skills, creativity and artistic interpretation. Each subsequent quilt represented a decade in the history and became a unique and colourful expression of the of the works, values and lived experiences of the Province. Alongside the unveiling of the quilts, a presentation on the history of the Province provided an opportunity to reflect on the journey of the congregation and the many lives that had been touched over the years.

One of the most cherished outcomes of the original project was not the finished quilts themselves, but the time spent together in their creation. As the Sisters worked side by side, stories were shared, memories rekindled and friendships strengthened. The quilt became both a historical record and a testament to the power of community in the spirit of the founder, Louise de Marillac.

Today, that same spirit is alive in a new group of volunteers who are helping to complete the original quilts and add new quilts to fill in the decades to complete 100 years of the Daughters of Charity in Australia. They will be displayed all together for the first time during the Centenary Celebrations. Drawn from the local parish community, the volunteers bring a variety of experiences and connections to the project. Some have known the Daughters of Charity for many years through schooling, parish life, ministries and community activities. Others have come to the project with little prior connection but were eager to contribute their time and talents.

Despite the different backgrounds, the volunteers share a common appreciation for the experience. Through hours spent stitching, planning and creating together, they have formed new friendships and gained a deeper understanding of the Daughters of Charity’s history and mission.

Many speak warmly of the conversations that naturally unfold around the quilting table. Stories of growing up, personal memories and community experiences have become an important part of the project. In many ways, the volunteers are experiencing the same gift that emerged from the original quilt project in 2008, the opportunity to connect through storytelling and shared purpose.

As the quilts continue to take shape, they are becoming more than a visual record of 100 years. They represent the relationships, memories and spirit of service that have sustained the Daughters of Charity across generations.

Each stitch honours the past while creating connections for the future, ensuring that the stories of the Sisters and those who have journeyed alongside them will continue to be remembered and celebrated for years to come.
