WeLcome to POPE LEO XIV
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, has had an interesting journey before becoming the first American Pope. Born in Chicago in 1955, he joined the Order of Saint Augustine and was ordained as a priest in 1982. He spent much of his career in Peru where he worked as a missionary for nearly 15 years before becoming Bishop of Chiclayo in the Northwest of the country in 2015. His deep commitment to the poor and marginalised shaped his pastoral approach. He has often emphasised the importance of walking alongside the people, rather than seeing leadership as a position of power, His deep ties to Latin America made him a strong candidate for the papacy. In 2023, Pope Francis appointed him Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a Vatican office overseeing bishop appointments worldwide. This role significantly raised his profile within the Church and positioned him as a key figure heading into the 2025 Conclave. Our new Pope is known for his pastoral approach, emphasizing humility and service. He once said, “The authority we have is to serve, to accompany, to be pastors and teachers”. His papal motto, In illo uno unum (In the one Christ we are one), signals his commitment to unity in a time of global division.
