A new chapter unfolds
Under the support of the Irish Province, the Daughters of Charity have been steadily expanding their mission in Kenya since their arrival in 2002, when they established their first communities in Thigio (Limuru) and Chepnyal (West Pokot). Over the years, their presence has grown to include five key locations:
- Thigio in Limuru – Kiambu County
- Chepnyal in West Pokot County
- Kitale in Trans Nzoia County
- Chanzo in Nairobi Metropolitan County
- Kiio near Mwingi in Kitui County
Currently there are 34 sisters serving in Kenya, including 14 Kenyan Sisters and 20 missionary Sisters. Their ministries span a wide range of services, including:
· Sustainable agriculture and food security (e.g., ICSAP project in Kitale)
· Hospice and healthcare services
· Support for vulnerable families and children
· Education and capacity-building
The growing number of communities and Sisters, along with the breadth of their ministries, shows a strong and evolving presence of the Daughters of Charity in Kenya. There has now been an official announcement that Kenya has become a Region of the Daughters of Charity in its own right with Sr Liz Smith DC named as its first Regional Superior. We wish all our Sisters in Kenya every blessing as this new chapter unfolds.
