The Daughters of Charity in Ethiopia have launched a major new initiative to support communities affected by conflict and environmental disaster in the Tigray region. The project, titled “Emergency Response, Consolidation, and Recovery Support for Conflict and Disaster‑Affected Communities,” was officially launched on 10th March 2026 through the Daughters of Charity Tigray Coordinating Office.

Supported by Caritas Germany, the project focuses on the areas of Irob, Gulomekeda, and Abergele, regions that have been deeply impacted by recent conflict and ongoing environmental challenges. The initiative aims not only to meet immediate humanitarian needs, but also to strengthen long‑term recovery, resilience, and the restoration of human dignity.

“Together, we reaffirm our commitment to rebuilding lives and restoring hope for communities affected by conflict and disaster.”

The Daughters of Charity have a long‑standing presence in Ethiopia, with ministries rooted in education, healthcare, and social development. In Tigray, the Sisters remained close to the people throughout the most difficult periods of conflict, continuing their mission of accompaniment and service. Faithful to the charism of St Vincent de Paul and St Louise de Marillac, the Sisters live among those they serve, ensuring that the Church’s preferential option for the poor is lived out in daily practice.

This new initiative stands as a sign of hope and renewal, demonstrating that even in the aftermath of profound suffering, recovery and new life are possible through compassion, partnership, and sustained commitment.
