Daughter of Charity who risked her life to hide a Jewish family

A new exhibition at Hull History Centre from 9-20 September 2025 highlights the courageous actions of Clare Walsh, born in Hull in 1896 and later known as Sister Agnes Walsh DC, a Daughter of Charity of St Vincent de Paul who risked her life to shelter the Jewish Cremieux family during Nazi-occupied France. Alongside the Sister Servant, Sister Granier, she provided refuge and education for the children despite the dangers posed by nearby Nazi forces, including the infamous Klaus Barbie. Sister Agnes was posthumously honoured as Righteous Among the Nations and is commemorated with a plaque in Hull, with her life also chronicled in a book by her great nephew, Ian Judson, who curated the exhibition attended by Alain Cremieux, one of the children she saved
