Celebrating the Vincentian Charism in sydney

Last Sunday, 22nd September St. Vincent’s Ashfield, NSW, Australia, culminated their weeklong celebration in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of St. Vincent de Paul and 130th parish anniversary  The festivities kicked off a week earlier with the opening of the Heritage Exhibition Centre in the Parish House. This exhibition showcased how St. Vincent has inspired Catholics in Ashfield from 1894 until now.

Celebrations culminated last Sunday in St. Vincent’s College School Hall with Mass celebrated by Fr Joti, who arrived from Fiji to serve as parish priest in Ashfield in 2018.  Concelebrants included Frs Alan Gibson, Michael Walsh and Kevin Canty.

There was a brilliant student re-enactment of the life of St. Vincent, bringing the legacy of the Saint to the next generation of St. Vincent’s students! The choir was superb and the Hall comfortably packed!

Parishioners encompassed Indigenous Australian, Anglo-Celtic, Filipino, Fijian, Zimbabwean, and Polish cultures, among others.

Sisters Thérèse, Margaret Armstrong, Angela Francis, Rosa and Celine were delighted to have attended last Sunday’s celebrations at Ashfield.

Sister Theresa Tighe D.C. (Provincial) welcomed Fr Eugene - "It is with deep joy and heartfelt gratitude that we welcome Fr Eugene, our Vincentian brother, as Provincial Director of our province of Blessed Rosalie Rendu." Theresa went on to say that Eugene's previous ministries have shaped him into a compassionate listener, a thoughtful guide, and a faithful companion on our journey of discernment. As we prepare for our upcoming assemblies under the theme 'Artisans of hope and peace,' Fr Eugene's presence is a sign of God's providence. His accompaniment will help us shape a future that is faithful to our charism and responsive to the needs of those we serve - our own sisters, the poor, the forgotten and all whose lives touch ours in any way. In his homily, Fr Eugene emphasised the notion of accompaniment, walking with people as they discover for themselves the freedom that is theirs as beloved children of God. It is up to us to do what God asks of us in good times and not so good times. He emphasized that we are not in control but God is in control and his grace and mercy extends to all of us.
