Sr. Ellen Flynn: Leadership, Legacy and Lasting Change
Sister Ellen Flynn has been a Daughter of Charity for 53 years and served as CEO of The Passage for nearly a decade. She also held the role of Provincial for the Daughters of Charity in Great Britain and Australia. Although she had no direct background in homelessness when she joined The Passage, her early experiences of poverty overseas shaped her values. With a background in music teaching and recent management training, Sr. Ellen spent significant time alongside staff and service users, learning the importance of addressing the root causes of homelessness rather than offering short-term solutions. She was deeply inspired by the origins of The Passage, which began when the Daughters of Charity, supported by Cardinal Hulme Archbishop of Westminster, transformed a corridor in their building into a safe space for people sleeping rough. She also recalls how Sr. Eileen, the first CEO, worked alongside people on the streets to furnish the space with donated furniture, creating a place they could call their own. As a woman leading the organisation, Sr. Ellen valued the compassion, integrity and person-centred approach women bring to leadership. She was also proud of The Passage’s work influencing government and local authorities and championing innovative responses to homelessness. Her advice to future changemakers is simple: have clarity and conviction, stay true to your values, and remain humble when mistakes are made. The Passage is built on the foundations laid by leaders such as Sr. Ellen and the women who came before her, whose leadership ensured the organisation’s values remain central to its work
